Abstract

The growing global ecological crisis exposes the multiple shortcomings of Western society which masks a culture of predation of nature and its non-renewable resources. In the midst of this, environmental education emerges as an alternative proposal to promote a critical, responsible and committed citizenship to sustainable development, with an intergenerational perspective according to present needs. By virtue of the above, the article analyzes the perception of university students on the taxation applied to plastic bags, taking into account the role that environmental education has in facing this social problem. Methodologically, this is an explanatory type and level of research, with a sample of 129 students of technical careers in the Mala district in Peru. The results show that students consider environmental education and environmental taxation as suitable mechanisms to face current ecological challenges. Finally, it is concluded that in order to strengthen and improve the scope of environmental education it is necessary to integrate novel elements, such as environmental taxation, articulated with interdisciplinary approaches and comprehensive active methodologies, to promote an efficient and ecologically committed tax culture.
